The Credit Valley and Trillium Health Center is one of Ontario’s largest academic health service networks and has more than 1,300 beds. A new approach was launched at Trillium Health Centre—a Patient Flow Task force, which provided more focus and structure to tackle the issue.
A request-for-proposal process brought the Medworxx Patient Flow Diagnostic Program on board, and the hospital implemented Medworxx Utilization Management
Staff are now able to understand, on a daily basis, the admission pressures from multiple areas including:
- the ED (averaging 40–50 admits per day)
- surgery (averaging 25–30 admits per day)
- other areas, i.e. clinics, urgent care and the community
The ALC percentage dropped from 18% to its current, sustained level of 8%. The focus on ALC was crucial to the hospital’s ongoing success and continues to be sustained: ALC cases have been reduced from approximately 135 to the low 50s.
